Guajiro caminado entre gotas de asfalto
(Guajiro walking among asphalt drops)

Born in Sancti Spíritus, Ariel Orozco initiated his urban explorations in 2000 in Havana and arrived to the Valley of Mexico City in 2005.  He walked the streets provoking and searching for revealing actions from the visual aspects where links and relationships are established.  However, his steps became more introspective little by little, like walking to the inside; getting to the self-referential nature of objects and signs, and later, to art and its history; currently focusing in what they hide, as representations.  In other words, almost like an emancipation process, his work became the basic question about art, therefore, about mankind and its links with the world.  So, the works transform into a moment or a possibility to stop and meditate about matters, which being part of our everyday life, cease to draw our attention. This happens when we face Favores (Favors), a pair of eggs, a brown and a white one, in which a layer of oil painting hides their real color.

Questioning our own understanding of known materials and elements, Ariel realizes a series of operations which are just simple interventions or alterations that lead into a new perspective or approach to reality.  Paint is the main material used to hide or contain an object’s aspect. Through several methods and techniques, paint covers an image, an object, a piece of fabric, to depict something different from the reality, even if it imitates it. In Ariel’s works, paint hides what is real, or it contains it in an object that stimulates every possible representation; like in the fish tank filled with ink, which hides what is written in the title (Un millón de peces, One million fish, 2013), it is, at the same time, one of the millions of images that can be drawn.  Thus, fish are swimming through their own abstraction, and we stop for an instant, and start looking to the inside, like this guajiro walking among asphalt drops.
